The Beauty Trials by Dhonielle Clayton

Book News: January 2023

We have two bits of book news to share this week that we’re excited about.

First up, it’s been announced that Sarah Rees Brennan, author of the Demon’s Lexicon trilogy, and the Lynburn Legacy series amongst others, has three new adult fantasy novels coming from Orbit! The first, Long Live Evil, is scheduled for publication in July 2024. It’s described as “A dying young woman, walking into her favorite fantasy novel and meeting her favorite characters—sending the plot spinning into chaos with her own wicked plot of unionizing the villains,” and features “a scheming harlot, a notorious playboy spy, an axe-wielding ice maid, and an extremely dishonorable bodyguard. In a castle at the edge of an abyss.”

Rees Brennan shares more about how the story came to be written and some of the things which inspired it, as well as other things you can expect to find in the book, in a blog post on her website. Long Live Evil sounds right up my street and I’ll be keeping an eye out for the book closer to publication time.

Secondly, UK publisher Gollancz will be bringing Dhonielle Clayton’s latest novel, The Beauty Trials, to readers on February 14th 2023, the same date as the US edition is published by Disney-Hyperion. This is set in the same world as The Belles, and UK editor Bethan Morgan said in The Bookseller that the story “takes everything we know and love about these characters and says ‘Hold my Belle-rose tea’.”
